Install CUSTOM ROM on Lenovo s920 Kitkat 4.4.2 8GB ROW S220 using CWM Recovery

Note: Proceed at your own risk. I'm not responsible if it does not work or anything happens to your phone.

Install CWM Recovery using the Mobile Uncle tools. Follow the process @ http://apriliasaputra.blogspot.in/2014/09/install-clockworkmod-recovery-pada.html

After installation, power off the phone. Boot into custom recovery pressing the POWER Button + Both VOLUME Keys at the same time.

  1. Download any ROW ROM for s920 from http://www.needrom.com/phone-roms/lenovo/serial-s/s920/.
    1. Eg downloaded Nexus 5 v1.0 4.4.3 for s920 ROW
  2. Copy the same to external sd card
  3. Reboot into CWM recovery
  4. Take a backup of your existing ROM
  5. Wipe Data / Factory reset
  6. Wipe Cache
  7. Advanced -> Wipe Dalvik cache
  8. Format data
  9. Format cache
  10. Format system
  11. install zip from sdcard -> select the ROM downloaded
  12. Wait for it to install, it will reboot automatically
  13. Your S920 now has a CUSTOM ROM

Issues Faced

  1. Root is not available, opening super user will give an error to update su binary
    1. To Root, flash the file 4.4Root @ http://www.needrom.com/download/root-for-lenovo-s920/
    2. This would install KingUser. Do not open the KingUser app (as i lost root and had to flash the zip again)
    3. Apps would automatically request for the su access
  2. GPS does not seem to work on the ROM Nexus 5 v1.0
  3. Do not flash the fix sensor compass zip file for Nexus 5 v1,0 as it results in boot loop
  4. The external sd card becomes the internal card and the internal 5gb is no longer available

Enjoy your new Lenovo s920.

Signal Problem on Lenovo s920 Kitkat

I never expected Lenovo to provide an OTA update for s920. Well anyways it came. But to apply the update i had to revert to stock recovery from twrp and unroot. Once done, updated and in 10 mins the update was completed and my Lenovo s920 was on KitKat 4.4.2. Great !!!!!

Yeah, i did read the reviews and comments about the slower camera, poor signal reception, but i still wanted to have the latest android on my phone. Yup, the camera was slower, but i did not find any decrease in image quality. And i had installed the Lenovo Super Camera apk on 4.2.2 itself. The additional camera features is a bonus.

Then came the signal problem, right from Day 1. I had 2 sims, and everyday at office from 10.30am to 12.00pm i just wouldn't get the signal. I couldn't make calls and also wouldn't receive any. In the evening, it worked fine. But at that critical moment when u really want to make that call...Damn.. the signal disappears....it was annoying but then the search started.....yes.. the search for a fix....Found some options to revert to 4.2.2, install MTK Droid tools and change some settings, install CWM, root the phone and then replace modem files.
AND... i didnt want to revert to 4.2, changing the settings didn't work and i was unable to install CWM using SP Flash tools as it always failed with error 8083. Yes, i tried to find a solution for that too, but ended up with a blank and stopped.

During the signal drops, I noticed that even though sim 1 has a singal, if sim 2 shows no signal, then i was unable to make the call. So, I removed my second sim, and am using my phone with only 1 sim and it is working perfectly. Now no signal reception problems at office at the same location.Yeah...

anyways hope Lenovo releases an update for fixing this problem....
